The focus is on Expressionism – particularly Westphalian artists such as August Macke, Wilhelm Morgner and Hermann Stenner – and on Art Informel, which is prominently represented by works by K. O. Götz, Peter Brüning and Emil Schumacher. Furthermore, following the acquisition of the collection of the antiquarian and art dealer Gustav Lübcke, the museum also holds a representative selection of works from the nineteenth-century Düsseldorf School of Painting. Drawings, watercolours and prints by leading figures of (classical) modernism, such as Emil Nolde, Oskar Schlemmer and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, enrich the collection with perspectives from beyond the region. More recently, the collection has been expanded primarily to include works of contemporary art. This reflects our forward-looking commitment to fostering dialogue between the historical roots of art and current trends, and to conveying a comprehensive picture of artistic forms of expression.
